This procedure, also known as Abdominoplasty, is designed for those interested in improving the contour and shape of their abdomen. The tummy tuck removes excess loose skin and fat and tightens the muscles of the abdomen. The best candidates are men or women who are in relatively good shape but are unable to lose a localized fat deposit or loose abdominal skin with diet or exercise. The surgery is particularly helpful to women who have had multiple pregnancies and have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal. The tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure and is not a substitute for diet and exercise.
The procedure is performed under a general anesthetic and typically takes three to four hours to complete. Most patients can go home the same day. The surgical incisions are placed along the bikini line and are hidden by most undergarments. A scar will also be present around the belly button. Drains are placed to remove excess fluid during the postoperative period and remain for approximately one or two weeks. Our nursing staff will teach you the simple care needed for your drains and incisions. Most patients require pain medications for one week and have returned to most daily activities by two weeks. We usually recommend taking two weeks off of work and ask you to refrain from heavy lifting and exercise for six weeks after your surgery.
