ABOUT EYELID SURGERY

The eyes are an attractive component of the face that deserves to be shown. However, an abundance of skin above or under the eyes can create an undesired, aged look. To combat the effects of this natural process, our skilled team of plastic surgeons perform blepharoplasty (also known as eyelid surgery) for countless patients every year. When done surgically, this procedure removes excess skin and lifts the upper or lower eyelid, which creates a softer, youthful look. Both men and women choose to receive surgery at Aesthetic Surgery Centre & MedSpa because our team of surgeons is especially known for their exceptional work with this treatment. Patients often seek out blepharoplasty to reduce puffy bulges, refresh their look, or even improve the function of their eyes, like their peripheral vision. If you're interested in rejuvenating your eyes with an eye lift to remove excess skin, schedule a consultation with one of our surgeons at our office in Tacoma, WA.

IDEAL CANDIDATES

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that is sought out by men and women alike. During your private consultation, treatment alternatives can be discussed with your plastic surgeon based on the symptoms and concerns you would like addressed. In most cases, ideal candidates for this surgery are frustrated with excess, hanging skin and folds above their eyes or bulging skin below the bottom eyelid. These conditions can cause vision impairment that can hinder one's daily life. For a rejuvenated appearance, eyelid surgery may be the right procedure for you. If you have loose skin that droops on the upper eyelid or bags and circles under the eyes, blepharoplasty can improve this to give you a younger appearance. For those who desire a less invasive alternative, nonsurgical eyelid tightening with a CO2 laser can also be considered.

SURGICAL TECHNIQUE

Depending on the complexity of the blepharoplasty, general anesthesia or IV sedation will be given. This procedure may be done on the upper eyelid alone, on the bottom eyelid, or a combination of both upper and lower.

  • Upper
Upper blepharoplasty assists in diminishing the hanging of skin that droops over the eye to create a more appealing eyelid appearance. An incision is usually made along the lash line or crease to trim away tissue and fat. This is a relatively straightforward outpatient surgery that only takes about 15 - 20 minutes. The incision is hidden within the upper eyelid crease, eliminating any noticeable scars. Conscious sedation can be administered for ideal patient comfort. Because the eyelid skin is the thinnest on the body, many patients require no or minimal pain medication following their procedure. Swelling and bruising are minimal, especially when the blepharoplasty is done with a laser. These effects typically last 1 - 2 weeks.
  • Lower
Lower eyelid surgery is performed to reduce puffy skin under the lower eyelid. The excess lower eyelid fat is either removed or rearranged through a hidden, inside-the-lower-eyelid approach. Alternatively, if a patient has a significant amount of excess skin, an imperceptible incision just below the eyelashes can be used. Most patients, however, do not require an external incision as the excess skin can be rejuvenated with either chemical peels or laser resurfacing. In some cases, nonsurgical laser treatments can be applied to assist with discoloration while dermal fillers can be used for added smoothness if necessary. This outpatient operation commonly takes between 20 – 40 minutes to perform.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Eyelid surgery can last up to two hours based on whether one or both eyes are treated. After the procedure, you should expect to take a few days to rest, as well as avoid any strenuous activities. Ice packs can help reduce bruising and swelling. The results from eyelid surgery can last years. Even though these outcomes are lasting, they still do not prevent the natural aging process. To complement your surgical outcomes, facial rejuvenation treatments at Aesthetic Surgery Centre & MedSpa, such as lasers, chemical peels, and fillers, can be paired to create a fresh appearance. In addition to these alternatives, our office offers nonsurgical eyelid tightening with a laser for those who are interested in less invasive methods for improvement.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much does eyelid surgery cost?
Cosmetic eyelid surgery costs can vary, depending on whether you are having an upper eyelid lift, lower, or both. As soon as your treatment plan has been developed during your consultation, you and your surgeon can then discuss estimated costs. To get natural-looking results that last a long time, it is vital for you to put your trust in a skilled physician who can provide you with your ideal outcome. To make it easier for you to afford a great eyelid lift procedure, Aesthetic Surgery Centre & MedSpa accepts many payment methods and insurances, as well as low-interest financing.

Can I use insurance to pay for my eyelid surgery?
If loose skin is limiting your vision, your insurance may pay for a portion of your eyelid lift. Please let us know during your consultation if you might be using your insurance. This way, one of our team members will be able to help you get the needed information and paperwork for your insurance company to process your claim.

What are some other benefits of an eyelid lift?
An eyelid lift not only helps to refresh your appearance, but it can also improve other aspects of your life. You may find your field of vision expanding when excess skin from your upper eyelid is removed. This procedure can also make it easier to apply eye makeup because your upper eyelid will be smoother. Additionally, eliminating fine lines, "crepey" skin, puffy bags, and dark circles under your eyes can make your eyes look brighter and fuller without cosmetics.

Will an eyelid lift fix wrinkles and Crow's feet?
Forehead wrinkles and Crow's feet are better addressed with a facelift or brow lift since the results of the eyelid surgery are confined to the eyelids only. However, eyelid surgery can be combined with a nonsurgical procedure, such as BOTOX, which will combat wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. An injectable filler can also be effective for adding volume to hollow areas, which creates a fuller appearance. During your consultation, we will create your custom treatment plan based on your goals.

What about nonsurgical treatments instead of eye surgery?
Skin tightening without surgery and injectable treatments (such as Juvéderm, Restylane, and BOTOX) can provide impressive improvements. However, if you have moderate to severe sagging skin or desire long-lasting results, an eyelid lift will typically provide better results than a nonsurgical alternative. After you have talked to your surgeon about your concerns and goals for your eyes, we can give you our honest recommendations so you are able to achieve the outcome you desire.
